Manager, Communications


The Manager of Communications is responsible for implementing a proactive and responsive communications strategy that positions the Alliance as the leader in TB drug development with a compelling mission, and a credible support-worthy partner. This strategy must be effective for multiple audience including industry, public sector researchers, philanthropic and private donors, policy makers and government donors, global health advocates, TB experts, prospective employees, physicians and patients.

The objective of the Communications function is to enable the achievement of TB Alliance’s long term goals which includes broadening the base of financial support for the mission, increasing our international leadership position in TB Drug Development.

As a member of a two person team, the Manager of Communications will be the primary internal writer and content developer, and responsible for tactical implementation of various communications strategies.  The Manager, Communications will participate in all aspects of communications including media and public relations, publications development and disseminations, web-based communications, vendor relations, and communications-related administrative matters.

Position Description

 Provide internal communications counsel to:

  • Implement comprehensive media relations strategies for reputation building, support of major announcements, and advancement of our leadership position
  • Work closely with other departments to facilitate the achievement of specific goals in stakeholder engagement, advocacy and policy development, and reputation building.
  • Participate with the Director Communications to ensure executive communications needs are anticipated and met including organizational positioning, and systematic communications to the Board of Directors, Stakeholders Association, and other key audiences.  
  • Manage specific projects with outside partners including a public relations agency of record, graphic and digital design firms, printers, etc. Implement key performance metrics for communications, and have accountability for results.
  • Manage all digital communications including website and social media platforms.
  • Participate in administering a budget and directing both internal and outside communication resources to satisfy annual plans for communications programs.

Raise TB awareness and expand the positive image of the Alliance through:

  • Identifying target audiences, identifying channels, developing messages, and assessing costs of communication programs
  • Ensuring effective print and digital collateral material in support of TB Alliance’s objectives including annual reports, web-site, brochures, magazine reprints, and video materials

Ideal candidates will have

  • 5 – 7+ years professional experience in comprehensive broad-based communications, with emphasis on writing and content development.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communications. Previous experience translating complex scientific and medical concepts into accurate, compelling communications that are easily understood by broad-based, global audiences is desirable.
  • Specific experience in international public health, drug development, and scientific thought leadership strongly preferred.  Ideally, experience will be primarily on the client side, with some agency experience helpful.   
  • BS/BA degree in relevant scientific area, Business, or Journalism.  Advanced degree would be a plus.

The TB Alliance is an international product development partnership (PDP) created to accelerate the development and adoption of urgently needed new anti-tuberculosis (TB) drugs. As a not-for-profit organization, the TB Alliance functions through strategic relationships with pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, research labs, and governmental agencies, and deploys preferred service providers for contract research. Based in New York City, the TB Alliance also operates a satellite office in Pretoria, South Africa.

The TB Alliance is preeminent in the TB drug development field and is pursuing faster, simpler treatments for all forms of TB through the innovative PDP business model that bridges the expertise and functionality of industry with academic and public sector interests to meet a major unmet global health need.

With an annual operating budget of approximately $60 million, the TB Alliance leads the advancement of the most comprehensive R&D portfolio of TB drug candidates in history. Currently, a portfolio of more than 20 projects spans from target validation to Phase III clinical development. Additionally, the TB Alliance drives efforts to ensure regulatory approval, country adoption of new regimens, and widespread availability of new drug regimens to patients.

Tuberculosis kills nearly 1.5 million each year. Yet, current treatments are antiquated, inadequate, and excessively burdensome. Long, demanding treatment schedules prove too much for many patients, leading to the emergence of multi- and extensively- drug-resistant TB (MDR-TB and XDR-TB), which are exponentially more expensive and difficult to treat.
